Best Time of Year to Paint a House Exterior in South Carolina
Painting the outside of your home is a big investment, and the weather while the paint goes on matters. In South Carolina, fall and spring are usually the best seasons to paint a house exterior. Here is why, and what to watch for no matter when you paint.
Why fall and spring work best
Milder temperatures, moderate humidity, and fewer afternoon thunderstorms give exterior paint the time it needs to dry and cure properly. Fall is often especially good, because the heat and humidity of summer ease up and the days tend to be drier.
Weather checklist for exterior painting
- Temperatures within the range printed on the paint can, since each product lists its own minimum and maximum.
- No rain in the forecast for at least a day or two after painting.
- Siding that is dry, with no morning dew or leftover moisture on the surface.
- Shade or mild sun, rather than surfaces baking in direct afternoon heat.
- Low to moderate humidity, so the paint can dry at a steady pace.
What about summer and winter?
Exterior painting can still be done in other seasons with the right plan. In summer, painters can follow the shade, starting on the cooler sides of the house and avoiding afternoon storms. In winter, mild days can work, but cold nights can slow drying, so the forecast matters even more. These things also change your timing:
- Sun exposure. Walls that get the most sun are often best painted earlier in the day.
- Prep work. Cleaning, scraping, and repairs take time before any paint goes on, so plan for them.
- Siding type. Wood, fiber cement, brick, and stucco can each have different prep and drying needs.
- Scheduling. Good-weather weeks fill up, so it helps to ask about dates early.
- Weather delays. A rainy week can push a job back. It is better to wait than to paint in poor conditions.
Do not skip the prep
Even in perfect weather, paint only lasts as long as the surface under it. Dirt, mildew, and loose or peeling paint should be removed, and damaged wood or failed caulk repaired, before the new paint goes on. Skipping this step is a common reason a paint job fades or peels early.
Is your home due for paint?
Take a slow walk around the house. Peeling, cracking, fading, chalky residue, bare wood, and gaps in the caulk are all signs the finish is wearing out. If you spot them, it is a good time to plan your project for the next stretch of good weather.
